Dhaka, 26 September : On the occasion of World Maritime Day 2019, a seminar was held at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) on 26th September, 2019 titled “Advances of Shipbuilding and Shipping in Bangladesh”.
The event was organized by the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department of MIST. The main objective of the seminar was to draw attention to the significance and future scopes of shipbuilding and shipping industries in Bangladesh by presenting related researches to the concerned authorities and dignitaries as well as taking necessary steps in that concern.
The Hon’ble State Minister of Shipping Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP graced the seminar as the Chief Guest. Commandant, MIST Major General Md. Wahid-Uz-Zaman, ndc, aowc, psc, te was the chairman of the seminar. Several professionals, academicians and representatives from different shipyards, dockyards, design houses, shipping companies, educational institutes, governmental organizations and classification societies were also present in the said seminar.
Three keynote papers were presented in the seminar. The first keynote paper was delivered by the Chairman of BIWTA Commodore M Mahbub-ul Islam, (N), BSP, ndc, psc, BN, titled “Inland Waterways of Bangladesh: Challenges and Opportunities ”.Related issues of inland water transportation problems and opportunities in relation to navigability and riverine routes in Bangladesh were addressed in his paper.
The next paper was presented by the Director General of Department of Shipping, Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, (TAS), ndc, psc, BN.He talked on “Advances in Regulatory Framework in Shipping and Shipbuilding in Bangladesh”. In this paper, regulations and ventures adopted by the current government to make the shipping and ship-building the state-of-the-art and profitable industries were highlighted. His paper also emphasized the importance of developing skilled manpower to avert marine accidents.
The 3rd and final paper was presented by Engineer ABM Mahbubar Rashid titled “Innovations in Design and Construction of Modern Marine Vehicle”. In his paper he discussed the topic in view of new design and structural aspects of ships.
Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, state minister of shipping, the chief guest of the seminar mentored in his address that the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) Department in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to generate shipbuilding experts in the country. Following his lead, his daughter Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina instructed to start the same department in Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST),the state Minister also emphasized the utmost utilization of NAME graduates to make the shipbuilding sector vibrant through judicial employment.
This seminar is expected to contribute to the maritime development of the nation and bring Bangladesh one step closer to becoming a successful ship building nation.
