Dhaka, 09 October: World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an organ of the United Nations (UN). During the Eighteenth Congress of WMO for development of weather, climate and water services in the South Asia basically in the The Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna (GBM) at its lower basin’s four countries Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and Nepal Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS) project were approved for implementation. Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS). India and Bhutan did not show interest to be included in the project. After that the project were introduced with Bangladesh and Nepal as the name HydroSOS-BaNe. During the April 2024 HydroSOS-BaNe concept note of the project were approved by the adaptation fund board. It is hoped that if the project is implemented in the GBM basin environmental disruption, landslide & river errosion, flash flood, availability of drinking water, river pollution, water logging, drought, food secuirity and adverse climate impact can be reduced and be protected and secured in Bangladesh and Nepal.
To implement the project for dicussion of its various matters and adopting the opinions of the implementing and benificiaries stakeholders of different organization and countries more than one meeting and workshop were held in Bangladesh, India and Thailand. To finalize the project on 08 October 2024 a meeting among the representatives of WMO. Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) was held in BMD. A workshop on 09 October 2024 was held at Pan Pacific Sonagaon Dhaka with participation representatives from WMO, BMD, BWDB and other stakeholders of Bangladesh. The HydroSOS-BaNe project was finalized with the unanimous consent of the participants.
The Honorable Advisor, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Ministry of Water Resources & Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr Hwirin Kim, Head of Hydrology and Water Resources division, WMO, Mr. Nazmul Ahsan, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Md Kamrul Hasan ndc, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief were present in the workshop and presented short specches stating the importance of the project. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Md. Ashraf Uddin, Secretary, Ministry of Defence. Focal point for BMD for this project Dr. Md. Shameem Hassan Bhuiyan, Deputy Director, BMD and other high officials of BMD were present in the workshop. Dr. Md. Shadekul Alam, Director, BMD has delivered short speech highlighting the necessity of the project and providing the vote of thanks he anncouced conclution of the workshop.
