Dhaka, 23 March 2023: Every year the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its 193 member countries and region including Bangladesh observe 23 March as World Meteorological Day with deem dignity. A theme is determined by WMO and focusing the them to encourage the people to combat the adverse effect of weather and climate changes by addressing and following the affairs for creating public awareness and taking effective steps. The theme for this year is ‘The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations’.
Human lives, resources and physical infrastructures are greatly affected through the various natural disasters connected to the weather and climate change. Weather and effective climate forecasting, warning, signals long-term planning & implementation and information management plays a significant role to deal with impact of disasters due to the resultant of weather, water and climate changes. For globally gradual increases of climate change, the main objective for this year of the theme is to build up public awareness among the people regarding warning and probable steps for better management of weather climate and water.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has taken initiative to observe the ‘World Meteorological Day 2023’ with great importance like other years. Honorable State Minister for Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman MP was present as chief guest to inaugurate the ceremony today on Thursday (23-03-2023) at Bangabandhu Military Museum, Dhaka. The Senior Secretary, Ministry of Defence Golam Md Hashibul Alam and the Secretary of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Kamrul Hasan, ndc was present as special guest. Different activities have been taken up to observe this day at BMD Headquarters, Dhaka along with its significant branch offices within the country. An exhibition of meteorological instruments and a documentary film on related issues arranged at the Headquarters for the public following the rules of hygiene. Office premises including main gate of the department decorated with different color lights. A scientific session also conducted by the scientists of BMD. Special supplements published in two well-known daily newspapers. Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television is broadcasting/telecasting special discussion programme considering the significance of the day.
Moreover, the operational units and Radar stations of Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Khepupara, Rangpur and Moulvibazar is remain open to visit for the public.
